Some History of Roulette
The French mathematician, Pascal, who invented the pendulum and was enthralled by perpetual motion devices, created the first form of the roulette wheel in the 1600's. The wheel had 36 numbers and the little white ball moved in the opposite direction to the wheel (as it does today).
Roulette has been called the "King" of casino games, most likely because the King of Monaco boosted its popularity in the 1800's. When roulette was played in Monte Carlo in the 1800's, another space (or pocket) was added to the wheel as a zero to increase house odds.
With the popularity of the game in Monte Carlo, roulette spread across Europe and eventually to the United States. In the U.S. a second zero pocket was added to further add to the house odds, and this is now called American roulette to distinguish it from French or European roulette.
How to Play Roulette
The aim of roulette is to guess on which number the ball will land when the roulette wheel is spun. The player places his bet or bets on a number, or numbers, on the table layout and then waits to see if the ball will hit any one of them.
There are two types of bets in the game of roulette:
The Inside Bet -the player's bet is put on any number on the table.
The Outside Bet - the player places his bet outside of the table layout.
The Inside Bet is made up of 5 different types:
Straight Bet - on a single number
Split Bet - on two neighboring numbers (often called a 2-number bet)
Street Bet - on 3 numbers in a row; the chip is placed on the outside line at the start of the row.
Square Bet - on a block of 4 numbers; the chip is put on a spot in the center of the four numbers.
Line Bet - on 6 numbers making up to adjacent rows.
There are only 3 kinds of Outside Bets:
Column Bet - on one of three vertical columns.
Dozen Bet - on 12 numbers - high, middle or low - called First 12, Second 12 or Third 12.
Even Money Bet - on 18 numbers. The chip is placed on one of the following: Even, Odd, Red, Black, 1-18 or 19-36.
Each bet type generally has a maximum betting limit which is set by the casino management. The same applies to online casinos.
How to Win at Roulette
Winning at roulette depends totally on the type of bets a player makes and the odds for each bet which are more or less standardized.
The odds are as follows:
Inside Bets:
Straight bet pays 35:1; Split bet pays 17:1; Street bet pays 11:1; Square bet pays 8:1; Line bet pays only 5:1.
Outside Bets:
Column bet pays 2:1; Dozen bet also pays 2:1; Even Money bet pays 1:1.
A player can increase his chances of winning at roulette by placing several types of bets for each spin. But many go only for the Straight Bet hoping to hit the 35:1 odds.
Online Roulette
Roulette online is no different from roulette in a casino. Of course, one doesn't have the "elite" atmosphere of the casino roulette table. Since its beginning, casino roulette has always had the aura of elegance and glamour. It was at first the game for nobility, aristocrats and high society, and land based casinos still try to hold onto this aura.
However, today anyone can play roulette particularly since it became available at online casinos. The online roulette game is the same except for the fact that the player is alone with his computer, placing bets with his mouse and adding up his winnings as "credits". Since the player's chances of winning are higher in European roulette, this type of the game is the most popular online. There are many European (or French) roulette games at online casinos, and, with today's improved and enhanced computer software, the game is just as exciting and thrilling as it was in a 19th century casino.
