The Chinese didn’t Gamble on Keno
When online casino games are being classified, one game always stands out in a class by itself – Keno. Keno falls into a category of its own – it is neither a table game nor a slot machine, yet it is one of the most popular games on the Internet. The game of Keno is often compared to a lottery, a casino version of the game most of us have played at least once in our lives. You may not know how Keno works, but if you’ve ever taken your chances and bought a lottery ticket, you have the general idea.
Keno is an ancient game with its roots in China; it supposedly goes back thousands of years to the Han Dynasty. Historians claim that during that time, the game was developed in order to raise money for the Han army, which was embroiled in a long war and was financially strapped. Chinese citizens would play the ancient lottery game and thus fill the army’s coffers. The game was an instant hit and even after the war effort came and went it continued to gain popularity all over China and, eventually, all over the world.
Keno is played in land-based casinos across the world, where you will find all sorts of Keno paraphernalia such as Keno cards, Keno lounges, Keno crayons and Keno callers. It is a game of chance but it is also a great way to kill time between other, higher-pressure games like blackjack or craps. Many land-based gamblers gravitate to the Keno lounge to relax, fill out cards at a leisurely pace and play Keno. Online Keno is very similar to land-based Keno but without all the physical trappings of the “real” game. But whether you play on land or online, you should know that the game comes with a big house edge – somewhere in the neighborhood of 30%. You can win huge jackpots but the chances are less than great.
Online Keno vs the Land-Based Game
In an online casino you’ll see the same elements as in land-based Keno – however, you’ll be playing with virtual tickets, a virtual display board and virtual balls. When you get your ticket, you have to mark off from 1 to 20 spots (out of 80). These are your lucky numbers; the numbers you hope will be picked. You pay as per the number of spots you mark off. After you choose numbers, it’s the computer’s turn to choose and 20 balls are picked randomly (there are 80 balls altogether). If the numbers you have chosen match the numbers that are picked by the computer then you’ve won. The odds aren’t great, but it’s one of the most exciting wins you can experience.
It’s a Real Gamble!
Keno is a game of pure chance – there is no skill involved and no real strategy that can tip the odds in your favor. There are different types of bets, ranging from the simple “straight” tickets to the more complicated “way” ticket, “combination” tickets and “king” tickets. Ultimately, though, it all comes down to Lady Luck and whether she’s in your corner when you decide to play Keno. People love the game because it’s simple and fast and it doesn’t require much concentration or decision-making. Like roulette or the slots, Keno requires no skill at all (though those other games do have better odds). It’s a game to play if you’re feeling lucky and if want to test out those good vibes you’ve had all day. If you win, you’ll never forget it.
