Gambling as High Society Entertainment
In the Far East, the Emperors of China loved to gamble and many of our modern gambling games evolved from Chinese games. In Europe during the 18th and 19th century, gambling was mostly entertainment for aristocrats and high society.
In England, gentlemen gambled at their "clubs". In France and Italy, men and women gambled in salons. At the summer "watering" resorts, everyone gambled, but all of these venues were suited almost exclusively to the high society.
Dinner parties were planned by high society hostesses with after dinner card games as part of the entertainment. Many a hostess prepared her list of invitations in accordance with how many people she needed to make up tables for card games.
Gambling as a Profession
In the United States, and especially when gambling became part of the river boats on the Mississippi, there were many gamblers who considered gaming a profession. These were usually "dangerous" players, many of whom used tricks and cheating to ensure their winnings. In the Wild West shooting matches were not uncommon over games of dice or poker – generally over someone cheating at the game: dice could be loaded or cards could be marked.
In the twentieth century, as more and more states in the U.S. outlawed gambling, the professional gambler more or less faded out.
Modern Gambling Entertainment
Today's gaming takes place first and foremost in casinos dedicated to this purpose. They are found all over the world and are not restricted to high society or aristocrats. Anyone and everyone, over 21, can play the games in a casino.
Some people attend casinos to play serious table games such as blackjack, poker and roulette. But the great majority of casino gamblers go for the fun and entertainment.
