Poker Hand Rankings
Before starting to play any of the poker variants, or even free poker online, it is important to learn the ranking of the hands. Most poker games use the standard hand rankings as follows:
Royal Flush - Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of one suit
Straight Flush - Any numbers in sequence of the same suit
Four of a Kind - Four cards with the same numerical denomination
Full House - Tree cards of the same denomination plus a pair
Flush - Five cards of the same suit
Straight - Five cards in numerical sequence without regard to suit
Three of a Kind - Three cards with the same denomination and any additional two cards
Two Pairs - Two pairs plus any other card
Tens or Better - A pair of tens or better
Some poker variations have slight changes in the rankings. One of these is 3 Card Poker where a Straight beats a Flush.
Playing Free Poker Online
Of course many poker players will tell you that nothing beats the tension and excitement of a poker game in a casino. However, online poker can be very satisfying, especially for those players that don't hold up well under pressure.
The easiest and most common poker game is 5-Card Draw Poker. In this game you place your ante before dealing the cards. The ante is usually decided by the "house" - in this case your online casino. Then you and the dealer each receive 5 cards face down. If you think your cards are good enough, you bet an amount equal to the ante or more. If you want to "fold" (throw in your cards) you lose your ante and the game ends. After your first bet, you can ask the dealer to replace up to three cards in your hand. Once you have seen the replacements, you can raise your original bet. If the dealer folds, you have won.
5-Card Draw is often played socially at poker parties, sometimes for nickels and dimes, and sometimes for high stakes. It all depends on the decision of the players before they begin.
Playing 5-Card Draw for free, online, can really give you lots of fun. You bet but with no money. You exchange cards and then the computer gives you a "Congratulations you won" pop-up, or a "Boo you lost" when your cards come up with nothing. When you do win, you wish that you had played for real money, but the "Play for Fun for Free" is a really entertaining way to pass the time with online gambling.
Other Free Poker Variants
There are other poker variants, such as Stud Poker, Texas Hold'em, Omaha Poker and Pai Gow Poker, but not all of these are offered for free, and a few of them require that you connect to a poker network on the internet.
Then there is also online Video Poker. Video Poker somewhat resembles a slot machine set up and is a far more complicated game.
Try as many of the Free Poker games as are available at the online casino of your choice and practice your betting capabilities as well as enjoying the free poker game.
